THE COMPANY
Antica Cantina Sant'Amico rises in the area of Sant'Amico, near the medieval village of Morro d'Alba, 10 km from the sea.
The original structure dates back to the early nineteenth century and includes a vast area of land, more than 40 hectars of which are cultivated with vines of various types, especially Lacrima di Morro d'Alba and Verdicchio Classico, but also Cabernet, Montepulciano, Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah, Ciliegiolo Aleatico and the extremely rare for the area, Pinot Noir
At the Centre of the Estate can be found the historical park with the old wine cellar, the main Villa S.Amico, the old church named after tha Saint Amico, the Orangerie and the stables.
The Antica CAntinsa Sant'Amico has also a vast area dedicated to olive tree fields. More than 1200 olive trees are cultivated, Some of them have been producing extravirgin olive oil for more than 100 years. The company dedicates other fields to grow field beans, wheat, sorghum, sunflower and walnut trees, with plants dedicated to the production of precious wood.
This whole area was already inhabited in Roman times, and here in Sant'Amico a gold medal with the inscription "Teodoricus" was found in an ancient tomb. It would also appear that the "Lacrima" grape has been cultivated since ancient Roman times, and there is even a legend that the great Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, whilst staying at the castle at Morro d'Alba in 1167, found this wine delicious.
The best known wine from the estate, which is nationally recognised, is the red wine known as "Lacrima di Morro d'Alba". This excellent wine, a deep ruby red with purplish lights, is harmonious and fruity with lightly tannic tones: it is a marvellous accompaniment to meals.
THE WINE CELLAR - cantina
The beautiful old buildings of the Antica Cantina Sant'Amico form part of the estate of the Villa Sant'Amico; nestled in the rolling hills of Le Marche and surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the historic winery was among the first to see the potential of the "Lacrima" grape and began to bottle the wine as early as 1971. The DOC for "Lacrima" was gained in 1985.
In the nineteenth century, sharecroppers from the estate would bring their grapes to Cantina Sant'Amico from seven neighbouring villages. The grapes were brought in wooden carts, drawn by oxen, and the peasants worked long hours, from dawn to dusk, to bring their harvest in on time. One of these old carts still stands in the courtyard of the winery today.
These days, at the Cantina di Sant'Amico, we use only our own grapes to produce the wine, grapes which are harvested by hand from the 40 hectares of vines. Production has been limited to 90 quintals per hectare (of the 140 permitted) to optimise the quality of the wine.
The Antica Cantina Sant'Amico was designed and built in the nineteenth century, but, today in the twenty-first century, we continue to produce wine of the highest standards with up-to-date equipment and our state of the art bottling plant, which enables us to promote a wide range of excellent wines.
Moreover, thanks to the quality of its purpose-built brick structure, we are able to maintain an internal constant temperature in the Cantina throughout the year. The cellar area, in particular, was designed in such a way that outside light cannot enter and run the risk of damaging the precious wine. Little shafts of sunlight penetrate through small fissures in the thick old brick walls and create a magical play of light and dark in these old cellars.
Alongside the area where we process the wine, we have created an area that recreates the old wine cellars, and here we are able to host wine-tastings and small events. There is space for up to 50 guests, who can enjoy the wonderful historic atmosphere of the old winery, and enjoy delicious local food and, above all, experience our award-winning wines.
VINEYARDS:
Our vineyards are spread out over a hilly terrain, the soil being largely clayey and therefore both fresh and deep enough to be conducive to good fertility.
Although the majority of our vines are dedicated to the ’Autoctono Lacrima’ grape we nonetheless also produce other reds, such as Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Pinot, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pino Nero – while still never forgetting the most important whites of Verdicchio and Malvasia.
The vineyards are situated at between 160 and 200 metres above sea level, with the slopes facing both south south-east and north-east. The age of the vines range from 2 to 13 years.
Both the early and late grape harvests are carried out exclusively by hand between the end of August and the middle of October.
Our region’s typically Mediterranean climate makes its perfect contribution, with the vines benefiting from both the maritime air and the special micro-climate enjoyed by our historic park’s terrain.
All Sant’Amico’s hydraulic and agricultural systems are organized to perfectly optimize the deep drainage characteristics of the soil, thereby regulating water levels even when naturally in excess.
THE OLIVE TREES FIELD - uliveto:
The olive tree field spread over a Southern exposure vast area of hilly terrain.
There are around 1200 olive trees, some of them more than one hundred years old, with varieties which can be considered the
oldest of our territories,
such as Raggia,, Rosciola
and Carbonella, together
with Leccino and Frantoio.
We are continuously
developing this product,
using new and innovative
planting techniques to ensure
that we continue to provide
the highest quality.
The pruning is done by hand by experienced farmers. Their knowledge of traditional cutting techniques ensure that each of the olives receive the right amount of nutrients from the plant.
The plants are treated with the greatest care and harvesting is also done by hand which gives the oil its definitive taste. This is what is behind our extra virgin olive oil "Villa Sant'Amico”, much appreciated by our customers.
THE ESTATE "VILLA SANT'AMICO"
The historic park was created in the nineteenth century by an english landscape designer and extends for30 acres around the main building, Villa Sant'Amico.
The park is enclosed by two avenues of venerable old pine trees, and is full of many other species of mediterranean trees, including Lebanon cedars and giant redwoods.
Along the path leading from the immaculate lawns of the Orangery Sant'Amico can be found nine monumental plants and a small lake.
The Villa Sant'Amico,, situated deep in the hearth of the park, is a magnificent country house which has given the name to the local area ( originally called San Domenico). The imposing villa is revealed at the end of a long tree-lined avenue and is built of warm red bricks, its rich colour complementing the fresh greens of the trees that surround it. the house is on 4 floors, including the central lookout, or "belvedere",, and a basement.
The first oener of Villa Sant'Amico, an engineer ahead of his times, designed an ingenious and daring central heating system for the house.
in order to overcome the problem of heating the numerous and vast rooms in the house, he used hot air fed by wood burning boilers located in the basement of the house to enter the various rooms through vents in the walls. the interiors are decorated with frescoes, carvings and pictorial wall decorations.
The Chapel of the Villa Sant'Amico, which dates back to 1880, is perfectly conserved and used for weddings.
The Orangerie has the typical structure of a nineteenth century greenhouse, with one whole wall of glazed panels from floor to ceiling and with the original thin iron columns supporting the roof.
It has recently been completely refurbished and is used for events and parties. It is also used to store the numerous lemon and orange trees from the estate to protect them from winter frost.
The Orangerie Sant'Amico is spacious enough for entertaining large groups of people with room for up to 140 guests seated at tables. It provides an elegant and welcoming background for memorable events.
The building is surrounded by parklad and the big windows overlook two terraced lawns, lined with rose bushes and fragrant bushes of herbs.
